Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) is basically a life support needed in the situations of Lung failure and heart failure or both. Specially after COVI 19 pandemic which specifically targets the lungs tissue ECMO has been very widely used to treat lung failures.
Basically it performs two basic functions one is the most important oxygen exchange and carbon dioxide removal from the body and sometimes when cardiac support is also required it provides adequate blood flow assisting heart function too.
